Bailout won't put the brakes on downward slide
The point was driven home this week by
federal government data that showed an economy losing ground fast. Sales
of newly constructed homes plunged nationwide in August to their slowest
pace in 17 years, while the average price fell 11.8 percent from the month
before, the biggest drop on record. Claims for jobless benefits jumped to
a seven-year record in the week ending Sept. 20. And orders for durable
manufactured goods such as autos and appliances fell 4.5 percent in
August.
